In 2020, Wizards of the Coast released a widely praised adjustment to 5e through the Tasha's Cauldron book, allowing players to now choose any combination of ability scores regardless of race. While race did still dictate how these were spread, typically +2 in one ability and +1 in another, it was no longer required for Genasi to have +2 CON or Half-Orcs to have +2 STR, for example. Now, however, they've brought back the concept by tying ability scores to Backgrounds. I personally don't understand at all why this was changed. Why would WotC add more restrictiveness by requiring certain classes to have specific backgrounds in order to have any sort of optimization for their abilities? Players who like being Barbarians, for example, can now only truly cycle between the Soldier or Farmer background every time they make a new character. Backgrounds are one of the most important customization aspects of the game. To limit this is a ridiculous step away from the direction they were heading.
